Why Study English?
- Students will sometimes ask, “I speak English. Why do I need to study it in school?” Studying English enables you to communicate effectively. This subject allows you to enhance both your written and oral skills. By studying English, students are able to find their voices and to share their opinions with others.
- The study of literature also provides the student with a more diverse world view as readers use their analytic skills to understand characters and conflicts, and question what they would do if faced with such situations. History and culture are also transmitted through literature, and by studying plays, poems, novels and other forms of media students learn about the world around them. Reading is discovery but it is also self-discovery. By examining works of good literature, students are forced to examine their own values and beliefs and by doing so they come to a fuller understanding of who they are.
