This year FHCI students in grade 10, grade 11, and grade 12 students who are graduating next year, will have opportunities to complete their literacy requirement by taking the OSSLT (Literacy Test). As a reminder, successful completion of the literacy requirement is a prerequisite for graduation.  The Ministry of Education has exempted all grade 12s who are graduating this year from this requirement.

There will not be a modified schedule for Literacy Test days.  All students are expected to attend their regularly scheduled classes.  Continue reading for more detailed information for students in grade 10, grade 11, and grade 12 students graduating next year, or students in the Remote Learning Program (RLP).

GROUP 1: Grade 11, Grade 12 Students Graduating Next Year (In-Person)

  • The OSSLT consists of two sections to be written over two days.
  • Each section will take approximately 60-90 minutes to complete, and all students can have extra time to complete each section if needed.
  • All OSSLT activities (practice and actual test) will take place during PERIOD C (am) during the regularly scheduled school day.  Students must write the test in-person; however, the test will be written on-line.
  • Students eligible for special accommodations will be contacted by the Special Education Department in advance of the test.
  • There will be optional drop in support sessions in November
  • Dates of the OSSLT Sessions:
  • Mon. Nov. 22 (Period C) – In Class Practice Test
  • Tues. Nov. 23 (Period C) – Section 1
  • Wed. Nov. 24 (Period C) – Section 2
  • Thurs. Nov. 25 & Fri. Nov. 26 – Make up days

Parents and students interested in learning more about the OSSLT are invited to view this OSSLT FAQ Page or visit the EQAO website at https://www.eqao.com/the-assessments/osslt/. Here you will also find a practice test that students can take as many times as they wish. This will be the same practice test delivered by Teachers to all GROUP 1 students on November 22nd.  Please continue to check our website and your School Day Account for additional information in the coming weeks.

GROUP 2: Students Currently in Grade 10 (In-Person)

All Grade 10 students enrolled in In-Person Learning will complete the OSSLT at FHCI in the spring of 2022.  Further information and preparation plans will be communicated in second semester

GROUP 3: Students Enrolled in the Remote Learning Program (RLP)

Students enrolled in the Secondary Remote Learning Program (SRLP) will not be writing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) this year. It is the Ministry of Education’s expectation that students who are writing the OSSLT must do so in-person; therefore, students in SRLP will be offered other opportunities to fulfill this requirement.
